Statements Alno
Right now many aspects of kitchen design seem to be in the process of opening up. Closed walls are being broken down and open structures are breathing more life into the kitchen. What role does design play in a modern kitchen?
Design is definitely a competitive factor. Kitchens have to be capable of more than “just functioning”. The design of kitchen furnishings will continue to be strongly influenced by the current trends in architecture and consumer goods. The long useful life of the products calls for classic, timeless design – furniture makers tend to interpret the dynamic curves fashionable in other areas more moderately, for instance. Individualisations in the same style as passing fashions are generally restricted to the decorative aspects of interior design. But as with textiles or car paints, a few decorative touches and colour accents can be used to interpret the current zeitgeist. Changes in the way the kitchen is structured are reflecting the tendency towards elegant, elongated, horizontal shapes. The lightness and transparency of today’s interior architecture is also being echoed in new kitchen furnishings that appear to hover above the floor.
