Interview Teherani

In the old days, everything happened in granny’s eat-in kitchen. Today the kitchen has become a place of communication again. How can the design, as well as the architecture, promote this communicativeness?
That particular objective is very easy to put into words. It’s no longer function that’s uppermost, but emotion. That means it’s all about cosiness, atmosphere, sensory balance. Nevertheless, the functions of, say, the bathroom and kitchen, still have to work perfectly and be available at any time. But these functions no longer dictate the look of the home. Why should I have to look at a monitor, a refrigerator or a stereo system if I don’t happen to need them at that particular moment? This exhibitionist display of luxury will increasingly give way to concealed, integrated technology. And because the walls of the home are on the retreat too, all that’s left for accommodating and concealing special functions is the furniture. The idea of increasingly fragmented furniture design that allows us to show off every CD, every single book in specially designed works of art is becoming increasingly dubious. A room is a room because the atmosphere is right, not because it replicates consumer trends.

Are you looking forward to the premiere of your +Artesio collection at LivingKitchen in Cologne?

Obviously experiencing first-hand how the public reacts to my first kitchen, which is the result of a collaboration between Poggenpohl and myself, is an extremely interesting prospect. I’m looking forward to hearing people’s specific reactions and ideas in direct, personal conversations. For me, a trade fair is always an important source of inspiration because nothing can compete with the immediate impression of seeing something on a 1:1 scale. It gives you a chance to see all the latest developments in one place and you can check out the soundness of every single detail on the spot. Normally that kind of in-depth research would mean spending weeks on the road.
