02 Design in Germany
What does German design have to offer apart from Bauhaus and mechanical engineering? A great deal – most of it well thought-through and often with more imagination than the Germans are normally credited with, according to designers like Grcic, Jehs+Laub or Studio Vertijet. This folder sets out to investigate whether there is any justification for national categories and ventures a sweeping synopsis of its own. After an analytical survey article on the design scene, it takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the peculiarities of German interior culture. In addition to the usual portraits of designers and companies, Vitra’s CEO Rolf Fehlbaum comments on the comeback classics are enjoying on the furniture market and Konstantin Grcic is afraid there probably won’t be any lasting change towards sustainability without regimentation. Even so, there are plenty of clever and attractive product ideas out there, as this compilation shows.
